The temptation to despair is not sinful by itself-the wilful giving in to despair is. Sometimes despair can flood in and break down our defenses-catch us unaware and roll right over us-christian or not-this can be a simple function of biochemistry -genetic or otherwise- it can also be a natural response to difficult situations..Plenty in the psalms about despair and no shame in it…there is also plenty in the human condition-one’s own and others-to cause despair. I worked for Samaritans for several years and met many very brave people struggling with despair-christians and non christians alike.
BUT! BUT! (there’s always a but!!)
We do live in the reality of Gods transformational love which is in many ways like the free gift of the wind ,the sun and the rain-life flowers if we let it. If we endure and are patient then life flowers perennially and despair passes…it is the expereience of emerging from despair that brings trust and eventually lifts the soul.
Tips: Discern when to rest and when to act.
Place yourself in the way of God as much as you can-remember that when you kneel before God morning noon or night-God really does hear because God really is there!
This means God can be trusted and leant upon quite heavily without you having to ‘prove’ yourself..
Having said that sometimes we also have to choose where our minds dwell-this takes discipline practice and exercise…speaking of which simple physical exercise is one of the great antidotes to despair-seems almost too simple but is true.

Love this song. It is my favourite of all hymns. I always say I want it played at my funeral one day.
I love the part where it talks about Jesus ever living and pleading for me. Also how my name is graven on His hands and my name is written on His heart. Wow! just how awesome is that. I can barely comprehend just how wonderful that is. One day I will see Him face to face and see my name there graven on His hand – Wow!
